Course Description
This module is designed for specific roles, such as firearms and public order police personnel, and Roads Policing Units, which are non-healthcare professionals working in high-risk environments. This learning supplements the basic foundation of first aid skills.
This module provides a menu of enhanced first aid skills that the National First Aid Forum has recommended are suitable for police personnel who are non-healthcare professionals. The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, has defined the content of this module as achievable and legally appropriate for the police service.
Course Content
- Manage a first aid scene
- Assess a casualty
- Manage a casualty with minor injuries
- Airway Management
- Perform adult basic life support (including child and infant)
- Demonstrate safe use of an Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
- Manage a choking casualty (including a child or infant)
- Place a casualty in the recovery position
- Manage a casualty who is having an asthma attack
- Manage a casualty after near-drowning
- Manage a casualty with shock
- Manage a casualty with chest pain
- Manage a casualty who has fainted
- Manage a casualty who is bleeding
- Ballistic Trauma Treatment
- Manage a casualty with an abdominal wound
- Manage a casualty with a chest wound
- Manage a casualty with burns or scalds
- Treatment of blast Injuries
- Identify and treat eye injury
- Manage a casualty with fractures or dislocations
- Manage a casualty with a strain or sprain
- Manage a casualty with a head injury
- Manage a casualty with a spinal injury
- Manage a casualty who is convulsing
- Manage a casualty who has had a stroke

Assessments
- Practical assessments are observed and recorded by the Trainer throughout the course.
Pre-requisites
- Learners must be able to perform practical tasks at floor level.
- We recommend that Learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy and numeracy, or equivalent. However, we acknowledge and embrace Viva-Voce (Verbal Assessments) for learners who may require additional support during assessment.
- If you believe changes may be needed to the course or its assessment due to a disability, please inform us as soon as possible, or at least two weeks before the start date. In most cases, this will provide us with sufficient time to assess your requirements and implement any necessary adjustments.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will receive a Module 5 First Aid at Work & FASTaid© e-Certificate.
